Five one thousand dollar ($1,000) scholarships were awarded to full time students pursuing higher education at Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and South Plains College for the 2017-2018 school year. Over twenty applications were submitted but unfortunately, the Foundation does not have the resources to award scholarships to all applicants. These individuals were selected based on their GPA, their essay, resume and recommendation letters.

2017 Scholarship Recipients

  1. Aubrey Brozo - Texas Tech University
  2. Hannah Fleenor - Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
  3. Lexie Harlan - Texas Tech University
  4. Jared Brogen Johnson - South Plains College
  5. Daisy Martinez - Texas Tech University

About the foundation: The foundation is funded through the generosity of the Lubbock Association of REALTORS, its members and outside donations.  It was established in 1981 during Mr. Walton's year as President of the Lubbock Association of REALTORS as simply, the Lubbock Association of REALTORS Education Foundation. The Trustees of the Foundation saw fit to rename it in 2016 in memory and honor of Mr. Walton.  Mr. Walton, a 40 year REALTOR Emeritus member of the association, dedicated countless hours of service to the Lubbock, Texas and National Association of REALTORS. He served as the President of the Lubbock Association of REALTORS in 1981, President of the Texas Association of REALTORS in 1999, and was appointed to the Texas Real Estate Commission by Governor Rick Perry from 2001 to 2007. He was appointed as Chairman of the Commission by Governor Perry in 2004. Mr. Walton loved this community and the REALTOR profession and the foundation strives to honor his legacy.

2016 Realtor of the Year and Pinnacle Award Winners

Three awards were given at the Installation and Awards Banquet on January 13 at The Legacy. The association's yearly award, REALTOR® of the Year, is awarded to a REALTOR® for outstanding service to the association. Ken Harlan was recognized as the 2016 REALTOR® of the Year.  Harlan has been a REALTOR® member of the LAR since 2003, and since joining, he has served on many committees, including MLS Issues and Policies, Finance, and Governmental Affairs/TREPAC. Harlan chaired the MLS Issues and Policies KenCommittee in 2007 and 2014. He has earned the Graduate, REALTOR® Institute designation (GRI).  He is also a graduate of the Texas REALTORS® Leadership Program (TRLP) and a $1,000 Major Investor in TREPAC. Harlan also represents the LAR at the state level, serving on the Texas Association of REALTORS® MLS and Technology Committee and Professional Standards Committee.  He is appointed as a Texas Association of REALTORS® Director for 2017 to 2019.

The association also celebrated two REALTOR® members with the Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is not a yearly award and is only given to REALTORS® who have dedicated many years of service to the real estate profession and especially, the LAR. Linda Gaither and Emily Ratcliff were given the Pinnacle Award for their 20 plus years of service to the LAR. They both hold the professional designations:  Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) and Graduate, REALTOR® Institute (GRI). They are $1,000 Major Investors in TREPAC and members of the National Association of REALTORS® President' Circle.  Both ladies have served on more than ten LAR committees, subcommittees and task forces, each and chaired more than five committees. They were both elected as President of the LAR, Gaither in 2005 and Ratcliff in 2001. Their service also extends to the Texas Association of REALTORS®. Gaither has served on TAR's Legislative Liaison Program, Political Involvement Council, REALTOR® Legislative Network and State Representative Contact Team. Ratcliff served on TAR's Convention Task Force, Legislative Committee, Nominating Committee, Professional Standards Committee and served as a TAR Directors from 2002 to 2007. Linda and Emily

REALTOR vs. Licensee

It's a common misconception. Consumers think anyone that has a real estate salesman or broker licensee is a REALTOR®. But only members of the National Association of REALTORS® are allowed to call themselves a REALTOR®, which make you MORE than JUST a licensee.
